Manlio Matteo Albi Marini strives to find an ordinary selection of extraordinary items curated in the 20th Century “Hard to finds ” designs in memory of my grandmother Lea Mariella Grita.
Lea Mariella Grita was born in Genoa in 1927.
As an only child, her father, a seafaring captain, who sailed to all corners of the world, transmitted to his daughter his curiosity and passion for beautiful, exotic and particular objects.
The family moved to Naples where Lea Mariella graduated in architecture with honors at a time when few women graduated in scientific subjects.
From early days she became a collector of paintings, sculptures, antiques , murano glass. her interest included series of furniture and design objects.
During the 1980s and 1990s her animated living room became the centre of neapolitan social life. During this era one could rub shoulders with personalities such as Andy Warhol or Joseph Beuys to name a couple, while sipping coffee or enjoying an ice at the caffe Gambrinus.
It was in these exciting years that Lea Mariella created and gradually increased her collection of special pieces (artifacts). and most importantly meticulously documenting each of her purchases , contextualising and enriching them with anecdotes.
Manilo Matteo, her grandson, has inherited through his father, not only her documents and her collections, but has also inherited her passion and curiosity, but above all an extraordinary “eye” and a certain aesthetic taste for these particular objects.
This passion together with a very strong bond with his late grandmother, is the “fil rouge’ that has lead to the birth of The Above gallery.
